Design Studio Bootcamp

What is design?

Your goal

Investigate how designers notice needs, analyze existing products, and document the design cycle while establishing safe studio and process-journal routines.

Student plan · work through these in order

  1. 1

Open Design Studio Bootcamp in this course page. Read today's goal and Criterion A.

  2. 2

Sort designed objects by user, purpose, form, and function; then build a class definition of design.

  3. 3

Stop at the checkpoint: Design definition + object sort. Save your work and make sure the evidence is easy to find.

  4. 4

Turn in or update: Design-object analysis + process-journal launch. If it is not due yet, leave it organized for the next class.

Before asking for help

Re-read the current step, check the criterion or example, ask a partner one focused question, and then request a short teacher conference if you are still blocked.

Open the full subunit and weekly plan

Foundations of Design follows the published 2026–27 pacing plan. School events, closures, or a class's progress may move a lesson; use the teacher's posted update when it differs from this calendar.

Every class has a place on the calendar.

The plan follows Thompson School District's adopted quarter dates, student breaks, and no-student days. Emergency closures or school events may shift an individual lesson.

Quarter showcaseA tested scale model of an inclusive learning or well-being space, presented in a year-end design defense.

A score is a snapshot, not a finish line.

Foundations of Design uses evidence from the MYP Design criteria and Thompson School District's published standards-based language. Scores describe the learning shown—not a percentage.

Criterion AInquiring and analysing

Justify the need, plan research, analyze existing solutions, and synthesize a design brief.

Criterion BDeveloping ideas

Write measurable specifications, generate feasible ideas, justify a choice, and communicate a plan.

Criterion CCreating the solution

Follow a logical plan, use tools safely and skillfully, create a functional solution, and document changes.

Criterion DEvaluating

Test against specifications, interpret evidence, explain improvements, and consider impact.

The 4–1 learning scale

Half-step scores may be used between levels. IE means there is not yet enough evidence to score.

4
Exemplary

Transfers and extends the standard in a new situation.

3
Meets

Shows the expected standard clearly and consistently.

2
Progressing

Shows developing understanding with some support needed.

1
Emerging

Shows beginning evidence and needs significant support.

Course language reflects the district's published middle-school guide. The teacher will confirm any current school-level updates before grades are reported.

One text set. Two levels of independence.

Grades 6 and 8 use the same short texts and visual case studies because the sections never overlap. Grade 6 receives modeled annotation; Grade 8 compares sources and transfers ideas.
